So I wanted to get some feedback on my last post so I started a thread on one of the larger forums. I was looking for some positive discussion on how to play the Coven as they are in MKII. Now I know what you are thinking, "WTF, start a thread on a forum and expect some positive discussion!?!? This guy is obviously a moron." Well you are right I admit it. For some strange reason I figured that since there was already an entire thread dedicated to bitching about how the Coven has changed and how they need to be changed, I figured it would be interesting to get a perspective on how to play them
as they are.
Alas, it is the interwebs, and people don't actually like to read an argument, all they want to do is spray. Sorry if this is a bit of a rant but hey it's my blog. :)
I did get a few interesting responses, but in general (Ha!, get it? in
General? Ha! I kill me!) the signal to noise ratio is just way to low.
So if anybody that actually want's to have a discussion about how to play the Coven in MKII as they are, please let me know and we'll figure something out.
Whew, now that I have that out of the way...
I'm working on my Bloat Thrall...
This is just the basecoat of Thrall Flesh, boy is there a lot of flesh on this guy. But the real problem with this guy is his teeeny tiny legs supporting his MASSIVE FAT BODY. There is now way that I could put him together and expect it to last. So I've put a wad of green stuff under his arse and I plan to disguise it with paint and flock to blend it into the base.
I havn't played with this guy in MKII yet but I'm sure I'll find a way to make him work out, especially since K has started playing the High Reclaimer so he has ooodles of infantry. The 5" AOE on this fella' is sure to come in handy.
I just added the last bit in about the Bloat Thrall, so I wouldn't end on a bitchy note.
Yours in service,
The General.

I read the thread yesterday. The pathos you experienced trying to get people to stay on topic was evident. I thought your post here on the Coven was fascinating reading, and nothing you said was wrong, which was cool (for you).
The fact is that most people will review a movie they haven't seen. And when someone has 8000 posts on a gaming forum in a couple of years, they're not playing the game, because they haven't got the time.
RE: the Coven
1) They've retained their most subtle, and powerfull, ability, i.e., they have up to three effective warcaster activations.
2) They retain their 9 focus, and the new perfect conjuction allows them to cast Infernal Machine for 1, and curse of shadows for 2. Two fully loaded infernal machined helljacks will do the job on anything, and can move right through things they can't trample. They've gone from spell assassins to 'jack assasins.
3) Having lost Imprison and the stealth option, they really need some board control and cover. I think Gorman will make a sweet bodyguard for them, as his combo of smoke and black oil will shut down most assasin models. I'm finding pistol wraiths to be even more powerful these days, as their death chill can't be shaken off. Helldivers are also a potential PITA for opponents, though they won't benefit from watcher if buried.
4) They're really vulnerable to shooting. Lacking something block LOS, I think they need fast stuff that can engage squishy ranged threats. Stalkers come to mind here, as do things like Soulhunters, which despite the whining, are still more than capable of taking out things like longgunners, and benefit from the new, offensive ghostwalk.
5) One thing I'm still playing with is whether they're better off with a swarm of bonejacks (stalkers / helldivers) or whether they're better with super-killy helljacks. A Slayer swarm might be an option, and I'm planning on running them with several to try it out.
6) I plan to try them with some medium based infantry. Although that leaves the problem of arcing fire, they can still hang out in the backfield and arc their support spells forward. 10 Boomhowler and co or Blighted trollkin block a LOT of LOS.

Thanks Keir, I was starting to think I was going crazy.
FMB, I agree with your points, that is exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for.
I played a game tonight against K, and lost, but not before he had to kill my entire army to get at the witches. There was never a credible threat to the Coven before the very last turn, so I don't think they are as vulnerable as one might expect, as long as you play them WAY back and use their control area to maximum effect.
